Title of the paper :
French-Tamil Translation Studies in the 21st Century: An overview
Abstract:
Translation of French works in Tamil has a long history. Notably, the 21st century is an interesting period as far as translation of French works into Tamil is concerned. There has been an increase in the number of translations produced. More number of translators are at work and they take up a variety of works to inform readers about French thought, culture and society. Though contemporary authors are increasingly translated, there is no hesitation in reintroducing classics, which are more than 100 years old, to contemporary readers. In this regard, there is politics involved in the choice of works taken up for translation. This paper is an attempt to discuss their choice of texts in the light of socio-politico-historic-cultural contexts of the target language. The research questions formulated for the study are as follows What is being translated? Why? Do themes dealt with by authors influence translators choice of texts? How do modern translators justify their choice and voice their opinion through translation? In overall terms, our study serves as a window to an understanding of the key criteria for texts selection in the new era. It concludes with the hypothesis Ideology of translators guides the choice of texts in the Tamil translation of texts in French.
