Title of the paper :
The Experiencing Child! – History as symbol in Satyajit Rays short film Two
Abstract:
Satyajit Ray is one of the rarest colossal figures in films who has made considerable amount of movies for children including , Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne Adventures of Goopy and Bagha, Hirak Rajar Deshe Kingdom of Diamonds etc. Two by Ray is a short film or a film fable as he likes to call, showcases a silent tension between two kids, one rich and the other poor, regarding possession and happiness, finally culminating in the former apparently winning over and eclipsing the latters sense of joy, only to find him defeated. As the film features only two child characters, the primary target audience seems to be children. A 12 min film crammed with symbols, It has been interpreted in multiple ways, by diverse viewers, but the historical nature of the symbols remain constant. The function of symbol, here becomes significant as children often experience as symbols and thus the fable format suits well this purpose. Keeping this in view our paper seeks to look at how symbolization of historical events becomes an important tool in the dissemination of historio-ethical knowledge on the part of Ray using Two as an instance.
