Gender Dysphoria in The Truth About Me: A Hijra Life Story by A. Revathi and I am Vidya: A transgenders Journey by Living Smile Vidya
Abstract:
Gender roles play a very significant role in society. This paper aims to analyse the gender identity crisis of DoraisamyRevathi as a transgender character in The Truth About Me A Hijra Life Story by A. Revathi and SaravananVidya in I am Vidya A Transgenders Journey by Living Smile Vidya. This paper will focus on how social and cultural norms force an individual to follow stereotypical gender roles and fit in the gender binary system. Transgender identity is still a taboo issue in society. Here Vidya and Revathi were born as male genders physically but later, they identified themselves mentally as females. They underwent gender dysphoria and finally, they left their families and went away with a group of transgender people and changed themselves into females by undergoing Nirvana a sex reassignment surgery. As trans women, they faced countless struggles and hurdles in their lives. Vidya was the subject of the award-winning Kannada Film Naanu Avanalla Avalu I am not he, she based on her autobiographical work I am Vidya A Transgenders Journey. The chief endeavour of this paper is to create awareness amidst people of the grievances of the trans gender.
