A Select Study of AO (Naga) Folktales
Abstract:
This study aims to construct a substantial perspective towards the unsung tales of the North East people with respect to preserving the indigenous culture and tradition of the Nagas. An approach to initiate the exchange of diverse cultures and to grant us a designation globally is the objective of this paper. The Nagas as a whole offer abundance in folktales, history, beliefs and unique cultural identity. Folktales are based on existent mankind and actual events and the Nagas have significantly more to determine than just being known as Head Hunters. Folktales serves as an authentic composition to deliver it. These are the stories of yore that may appear to be unbelievable and that is what makes the history of the Nagas fascinating. The Ao Naga folktales Tar nunger otsü will be discussed in depth in this paper. The selected folktales are The tales of Rabitsürla Stepmother who is often regarded to be cruel towards her step children. There are many stories about her in the Ao folktale. One of which is about a widower sangremer who remarries and his family of three crumbles because of Rabitsürlas evil intentions. Life without children in a marriage is distressing for many. Itsüng longpen garden caterpillar is thus, the tale of a childless couple. The wife is in distress and takes a preposterous decision to feed her breast milk to the Itsüng longpen garden caterpillar and to raise it as her own child.
