Title of the paper :
A Delineation of Shamanic Culture in Lisa Sees The Island of Sea Women
Abstract:
The paper entitled, A Delineation of Shamanic Culture in Lisa Sees The Island of Sea Women views on the Shamanic practices followed in the Jeju Island of South Korea. This paper vividly analyses the religious ideas of Shamanism practiced by the sea diving women called haenyeo society. This religious act is practiced by shamans. It also presents the spiritual practices followed by the haenyeo women in the Jeju Island. The Jeju people use the shamans to conduct prayers and to give offerings to the sea god in doing the dangerous diving job under the sea. The shamans act as mediators between the spirits and human beings. Lisa See presents the various jobs of shamans as healers, and as spiritual advisors. It vividly describes the influence of shamanism in the matrifocul culture of Jeju Island. Through this novel, Lisa See brings out the different cultural practices of shamanism associated with the female sea divers.
