Title of the paper :
Implications of the Kundan Coinage in the Malabar Region of Kerala
Abstract:
Kerala is peculiar with its cultural diversity, high rate of literacy and political awareness. The significance in climatic conditions and the richness of human resource has helped the state to excel the fellow states of the country and to achieve many laurels of accomplishments in the colonial and postcolonial times. Though the society is much forward in the sectors of education, learning and development, the mindset of the people is still entangled in the conventional modes of thinking about the gender and sexuality. The attitude of Kerala people is conventional towards sexuality because of their religious inclinations. Attitude towards homosexuality and queer gender politics is very much evident in the coinage of the word Kundan towards the gay people. Usually this coinage is used to signify a male prostitute who is engaged in generating income through prostitution. Though homosexuality is viewed with a negative attitude because of religious allegiance of the people in the mainstream society homosexuality is practised secretly by the individuals who oppose the queer gender politics. The present paper is an attempt to analyse the implications of the Kundan coinage in the Malabar region of Kerala.
