Title of the paper :
Portrayal of Partition in Bapsi Sidhwas Ice-Candy-Man
Abstract:
The history of the emergence of two nations—India and Pakistan—is also the unfortunate history of bloody partition. The year 1947 changed the map of the Indian subcontinent as it brought freedom from the slavery of British rule for colonial India along with its partition on religious lines. Partition is one of the most tragic events in the history of the Indian subcontinent, as it brought untold misery to millions of people. Over 12 million people were uprooted. It was the largest exchange of population on both sides of the border along religious lines. There were unimaginable acts of violence, bloodshed, death, rape, riot, abduction, and suicide. This tragic event has inspired many writers in different languages who have given expression to the untold miseries of the population affected by the partition in their creative works. Bapsi Sidhwas Ice-Candy-Man is one such novel that records the saga of partition pain. The novel Ice-Candy-Man depicts this turbulent period in history from the point of view of Lenny, a handicapped Parsi girl child. The present paper attempts to discuss the impact of partition and the atrocities of communal violence as discussed by Bapsi Sidhwa in her novel Ice-Candy-Man.
