Title of the paper :
The Resurgence of the Politics of Fear: Refugees as the Contemporary Other in Europe A Cinematic Analysis of Selected Films
Abstract:
This research critically examines the evolving concept of refugees as the new other in Europe, with a focus on sociocultural dimensions influencing perceptions, attitudes, and policies. The paper details on how othering contributes to social identity construction, impacting integration and fostering exclusion, with the study of the nature of the refugee experience and its implications for social cohesion. The present study recognises the power of film to challenge perceptions, humanize experiences, and encourage empathy, the study references impactful films released in the last decade, including The Land Between, Fuocoammare Fire at Sea, Human Flow, Nacido en Siria Born in Syria, and The Last Shelter. These films expose the realities of displacement, providing a platform for affected voices and urging collective responsibility toward a more compassionate world. The scholarly analysis of cinematic portrayals further enhances our understanding of the complex dynamics surrounding the othering of refugees in the European socio-political landscape.
