Title of the paper :
Facticity as Fate in John Boynes The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Abstract:
Born on April 30, 1971, Irish novelist John Boyne is best known for his critically acclaimed book The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Boyne writes stories that traverse time and place, delving into themes such as identity, nationalism, gender, power dynamics, family, trust, and betrayal. By writing the book as a fable told from a childs point of view, he hoped to gently introduce younger readers to the horrific realities of the Holocaust. This paper examines Boynes most well-known Holocaust fiction piece, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The entire piece revolves around the following themes childrens innocence, factual information, racism, slavery, and the effects of the Holocaust. The protagonist, although appreciating its technical brilliance, struggles to define his place in his family and how to handle his friendship with Shmuel. It also draws attention to the fundamental injustice of hatred and discrimination against people based on their race or religion.
