Gender Differences in Shashi Deshpandes The Dark Holds No Terrors
Abstract:
Fiction became a powerful literary expression in the half of nineteenth century. The women novelists of nineteenth century created a new image of women struggles and oppression in their novels. The modern Indo-English novelists like Ruth Prawar Jhabvala, Shashi Deshpande made a straight journey into the psyche of women characters that are torn on the account of tensions generated by the discord between the individual and surroundings. The celebrated Indian novelist Shashi Deshpande deals with the unspeakable problems of women in her novels. Deshpandes fiction has generated great interests and her novels has received tremendous responses from the critics. This paper tries to explore the gender differences and traumas faced by the protagonist of the novel The Dark Holds No Terrors who faced inequality inside her home on the basis of gender discrimination. The problems faced by the protagonist Saru from her childhood days and the impact laid on her are analyzed in this paper.
