Title of the paper :
Language: Hegemonic Or A Bare Necessity
Abstract:
Language had always been an evolving power – a changing force in society. Human beings fulfill their social, economic and political needs through language. Linguistic hegemony helped the colonists not only to expand their empire but also to sow the seeds of slavery. Decolonization is a myth. Though the colonizers had left their colonies, they had left behind their culture and language. English language has become Globalish because of its Imperialistic past and Globalization. After nearly seventy years Indians are waking up to the reality that India is yet to become a free land. India with its pluralistic society, still maintains English as its official language along with Hindi. While the people oppose to Hindi imposition, they had remained passive to the imposition of English and other foreign languages. Most of them have forgotten their indigenous culture and their mother tongue. Most of the Indians still wear western garments and follow western food culture. The purpose of the paper is to explore the influence of English and foreign languages among youngsters of Tamil Nadu, particularly from Chennai and Coimbatore. The research would answer questions like why there is a renewed interest to learn Foreign languages in Chennai apart from English. The purpose of the paper is to prove whether Language is power or a bare necessity.
