Title of the paper :
Reflections of Displacement and Nostalgia in select poems of Vikram Seth
Abstract:
Diasporic writing forms an integral part of literature that reflects the personal experiences of several authors away from their native lands and culture. Most of the works produced in diasporic literature depict Displacement, alienation, and identity crisis. Vikram Seth is one of the most acclaimed Indian travel writers, poets, and novelists. He is a diasporic writer who has significantly contributed to the contemporary literature of India that covers a diverse series of themes and styles. As a versatile writer, Seth delves deeper into the historical and cultural perspectives and their impact on shaping an individuals identity. His writing is a rich mastery of words that describes different hues and surfaces of society and culture. His works reflect cultural diversity that provides a glimpse of the various facets of life and complexities of human relationships in the readers mind, who can experience the emotional feelings through his characters. The research paper is a humble attempt to analyze select poems of Seth like Rakhi, All You Who Sleep Tonight, and Homeless through the diasporic lens to explore themes of conflict between tradition and modernity, a sense of Displacement, loneliness, Nostalgia, and the quest for identity. The paper uses the theoretical framework of cultural hybridity to depict conflicts, human predicaments, and deep longing for connection with the roots. Seth uses language and vivid imagery that show his remarkable style of writing poetry and create an indelible impression on his readers globally.
