The Quest for Happiness in The Monk Who Sold his Ferrari
Abstract:
India is known to the world for its uniqueness in spirituality and for the great sages who practiced and provided new directives for living a happy life. In the modern age, the entire world is after the materialistic life which is causing distress, discontent, physical and mental illness among humans. The impact of globalization and the advanced technology is causing humans to face challenges of life. The entire human race is facing the trials and tribulations of life in their endeavor to become more and more prosperous. Despite of the prosperity, humans are living a discontented life. However, in India several sages live a spiritual life and preach the significance of spirituality to people. Many Indian families visit temples, churches and Mosques, meet and honor priests, sages and gain wisdom of life in order to overcome stress. And all the humans in the modern world are in the pursuit of happiness. Robin Sharmas The Monk Who Sold his Ferrari is an archetype of Indian ways of simple living and understanding the purpose of life. Furthermore, the present work focuses on the techniques of life-long happiness. The present paper is an attempt to explore the causes and reasons for the unhappy life of humans as depicted in the novel through the character of Julian Mantle, a successful lawyer. Nevertheless, because of his discontented and out of balance life, he is forced to confront the spiritual crisis. Ultimately, he transforms himself to a Monk, discovers powerful lessons to attain ultimate peace. Robin Sharmas novel The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari unfolds the truth that the real and happy life lays in spirituality rather than the materialistic life.
