An Exploration of Dual Identity in Sandra Cisneros The House On Mango Street
Abstract:
Sandra Cisneros was the Chicano Latina novelist who has made her mark in American Literature. The work of Cisneros deals with the formation of Chicana identity, exploring the challenges of being caught between Mexican and Anglo-American cultures. Sandra Cisneros critically acclaimed novel, The House on Mango Street explores the coming of age journey of a young Mexican-American girl Esperanza Cordero in an impoverished neighborhood in Chicago. Through the novel has forty-four interrelated vignettes the reader gets to experience the social and individual worlds of the Latina community through the young girls perceptions of it and her reflections on the unjust conditions under which the migrant community lives. Sandra Cisneros is best known for her first novel, The House on Mango Street which was published in 1984. Cisneros is also a dual citizen of Mexico and the United States. Much of her writing draws on her Mexican heritage and rich culture and it is based on her experiences in Chicago and Mexico. The novel shows the rite of passage of Esperanza from adolescence to youth. This paper analyze the dual identity of Esperanza Cordero, the protagonist by the way she faces oppression outside of her community and inside her patriarchal culture. The Mexican Americans always have experienced an identity crisis.
