Title of the paper :
A Melodic Exploration of Food and Culture in Haryanvi Folksongs
Abstract:
The rich cultural tapestry of any society is reflected in the folk traditions especially culinary traditions and folk songs. Through an ethnomusicological lens the paper attempts to analyze how Haryanvi folksongs serve as a unique and expressive medium for encapsulating the region’s gastronomic heritage. From celebratory feasts to everyday sustenance, these songs offer a captivating glimpse into the symbiotic relationship between food and culture. By deciphering the lyrical nuances and cultural echoes embedded in these musical narratives, the research aims to illuminate the role of folksongs in preserving, transmitting, and celebrating the culinary practices that defines Haryanas cultural identity. The paper, in its course of discussion, addresses questions as How do Haryanvi folksongs capture the social and communal aspects of food, such as feasts, rituals, and communal gatherings? In what ways Haryanvi folksongs contribute to the preservation and transmission of traditional food-related knowledge and practices? Has there been an evolution of Haryanvi folksongs in their portrayal of food over time? Has globalization and modernization influenced the representation of food in contemporary Haryanvi folksongs? The study reflects the relevance and importance of folksongs in preserving the vibrant and integral cultural landscape, serving as both a mirror reflecting the past and a living tradition that continues to shape the cultural identity of the people of Haryana.
