Cultural Alienation in Literature
Abstract:
Alienation, is a fundamental form of rootlessness, which forms the theme of many literary studies. The dictionary describes alienation as a sense of isolation from our environment, due to various circumstances. Alienation emerges as a spontaneous outcome of existential predicament in both intrinsic and extrinsic terms. The theme of alienation is variously dealt with relentlessly in literature and it is but natural that the concept of alienation leaves an indelible impact in English literature. Alienation is the outcome of loss of identity due to psychological, historical and socio cultural reasons. A displaced mans search for identity is a common theme in fiction. This paper is an attempt to understand and analyse the theme of alienation in English literature from different angles. It will be contextualised by referring to various works of a few renowned writers. The various nuances of the word alienation will be discussed.
