Marginalization in Mahasweta Devis selected works: Bayen and Draupadi
Abstract:
In todays contemporary world, many literary veterans have stirred the minds of the readers through revelation of social imperfections which crippled our society. One such major social flaws concerning with marginalization has become the very cancer in our society, which remains persistent for several centuries. Even with tireless efforts from various social reformers over the years, the social structure devised by the elitists as an essential means for exploitation stands untrammeled. However the birth of subalternity and post-colonial literature, over the last century shook its pillars. With the aid from some of the eminent minds from the field of literature has taken these issues into their shoulders. Among these great personalities, the contributions of Mahasweta Devi cannot be neglected, as her works were directly addressing the Marginalization of women and the oppressed classes. Apart from her vast literary prowess, her activist impulse and compassion towards such socially oppressed classes appears beyond our description to contemplate. This paper critically examines Mahaswetas thematic representation of existing Marginalization issues in Indian society in two of her marvels Bayen 1998 and Draupadi 1997. Her playwriting skills and exceptional usage of language, served as tool for sculpting her works to an extent where it had a significant impact on the viewers as well as readers to delve deeper into the depressed lives of the marginalized people.
