Indigenous culture to preserve the Shompen tribe of Nicober island of Bay of Bengal
Abstract:
The Shompen tribe is an indigenous tribe residing on the Andaman and Nicober islands the union territory of India. This tribe basically resides in the Great Nicober Island and their population estimated to be around 400. They lead a traditional life style and their economy based on hunting, gathering, and fishing. They live a small community and practice a survival lifestyle The main problem the shompen tribes encounter the visit of outsiders and the renovation of modern construction therefore continued construction of the East and West road through the heart of the Shompen reserve, the free food and their items being given by the Indian government. This paper will discuss about the numerous challenges including diseases, environmental degradation and loss of habitat due to modernization of forest and island. Their language, customs and way of life are of immense cultural value and efforts must be made to protect and preserved their culture for future generations.
