Title of the paper :
Language and Power
Abstract:
Language is an extraordinary tool that possesses immense power to rule over situations. Language serves as one of the most important parts of any culture. It is through language that people communicate, build relationships and create a sense of community. Among the 6500 spoken languages in the world today, each language spoken is unique in its own way. Language, being a medium to communicate, to express thoughts, emotions and ideas also leaves a lasting impression in societies and contributes in shaping the world that we live in today. Language generates power, creates and moulds power. The greatest power that language gives is the ability to communicate more, both in quantity and quality. Both Language and Power are inseparable. Power in discourse is the foremost idiosyncratic use of language. The vital way in which power is voiced and repelled is through language. Language reveals power, language creates power, language reflects power, and language obscures or depoliticizes power.
