Title of the paper :
Power Dynamics in Literature and Cinema
Abstract:
This research paper analyzes the representation of dominant images of femininity and their ideological impact on the Indian literature and cinema. Consequently, the core questions of this paper are how literature and cinema contributes to the field of cultural representation, specifically definitions of gender within a specific socio-historical context and how Indian culture interfere in portraying the female identities in popular Indian cinema has also been tried to answered. As a result, ideologies are regarded as areas of conflict and negotiation over what constitutes the real, or, to put it another way, about the imposition of one given discourse as hegemonic. In this process of negotiating hegemony, as Gledhill claims, ideologies may shift their ground, the central consensus may be changed and the real reconstructed Gledhill, 1997. It is my belief that literature and cinema are two domains where gendered identities are negotiated, and ideological tensions regarding femininity are played out. I will therefore attempt to present a model that uncovers the literature and cinemas ideological function by situating the images, representations and discourses within the text. Thus, this research paper analyzes all these elements by assessing some popular texts and films from Indian context and tries to find the different schemas for representation.
