Perpetuates and Defiers of Patriarchal Norms in The Thousand Faces of Night by Githa Hariharan
Abstract:
Feminism in India has traversed a nuanced landscape woven with intricate threads of socio-cultural, political, and historical contexts, providing a distinctive perspective to analyze gender dynamics in the region. Traditional world myths, deeply ingrained with patriarchal norms, have often perpetuated gender stereotypes and upheld male dominance. However, in the modern world, feminist movements have sought to challenge and deconstruct these narratives, advocating for gender equality and dismantling patriarchal structures. Through reinterpretation and subversion of traditional myths, feminist voices in Indian literature have played a significant role in challenging these norms and articulating feminist concerns in contemporary society. This Abstract explores the dualities manifested in The Thousand Faces of Night by Githa Hariharan, focusing on the contrasting roles played by those who uphold and those who contest patriarchal norms. Through a meticulous analysis of characters and their behaviors, the article endeavors to uncover the novels depiction of individuals adhering to traditional gender roles as well as those actively challenging established patriarchal conventions. The examination seeks to shed light on the intricate interplay between societal expectations and individual agency within the realm of gender dynamics presented in the narrative. Githa Hariharans literary work serves as a vibrant tapestry for delving into the diverse dimensions of patriarchy, exploring how characters navigate, either perpetuating or defying these deeply rooted norms.
