Title of the paper :
Dual-Language Strategy: A Tool to Unravel the Entangled Identity of a Female Bangladeshi Migrant in Monica Alis Brick Lane
Abstract:
Language-switching is one of the most common practices in diasporic communities. This chapter aims to review the use of language-switching in Monica Alis debut novel Brick Lane. It argues that Alis language-switching symbolizes hybrid identity, and meanwhile, contends that the protagonists employ language-switching both as a tool of social power and emotional expression. For the purpose of this study, the focus lies on exploring the significance of language in diaspora studies, and its role in the construction and negotiation of diasporic identities. Critical readings of Alis work illustrate that she remarkably uses language-switching strategy by balancing the culture of host and home country, consequently reflecting her desire not to compromise with her hybrid identity. The discussion on the development of cross-cultural connection and reveals that the language shift triggers the shift in the perspective and identities of Alis characters.
