Title of the paper :
Indian Diaspora on Screen: Exploring Cultural Assimilation and Belonging in a Globalized World
Abstract:
This paper examines the representation of the Indian diaspora in Jhumpha Lahiris novel, The Namesake, and its cinematic adaptation to explore the themes of cultural assimilation and belonging in a Globalized world. Through a critical analysis of the novel and film, this study investigates how the Indian Diaspora negotiates cultural identity, belonging, and cultural assimilation in the United States. This paper argues that The Namesake offers a nuanced portrayal of the Indian Diaspora experience highlighting the tensions between cultural preservation, assimilation and the quest for belonging in a multicultural society. The cinematic adaptation of The Namesake, directed by Mira Nair, brings the novels themes to life on screen. The film offers a visually stunning representation of the Indian Diaspora, capturing the complexities of cultural identity and belonging. The cinematography and production design effectively convey the tension emphasizing the challenges of navigating multiple cultural identities. The novel The Namesake contributes to a deeper understanding of the Indian Diaspora, offering a rich and complex representation of the Diaspora experience on screen.
