Title of the paper :
Journalistic Literature During the Indian National Movement
Abstract:
The period between 1757 and 1947 was known as the colonial period in the history of India. Officially, the British Government took over the reins of administration of India from the British East India Company in 1857. Since then, the Indian intellectuals have finetuned their struggle for freedom. In the process, they used journalistic literature as a powerful instrument for opposing British oppressive measures and arousing national consciousness among the Indians. This facilitated the growth of Indian journalism both in vernacular languages and in English as well. Leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Surendranath Banerjee, Sisir Kumar Ghosh, and Mahatma Gandhi have founded their own newspapers. Some newspapers like Kesari, Marathi, Amrit Bazar Patrika, Indian Mirror, Indian Opinion, and Juganthar have not only strengthened Indian journalism but also enriched Indian literature across the spectrum. There was a shift from grand style to simple style. Undoubtedly, the journalistic literature, during the colonial period in India has contributed to both national awakening and enrichment of Indian literature.
