Title of the paper :
Diasporic Sensibilities and Nostalgia in Selected Short Stories from The Unknown Errors of Our Lives by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
Abstract:
Diasporic literature thrives upon diasporic sensibilities suffered by immigrants, which is a real horror for both expatriates and the readers. Diaspora refers to a population who are uprooted from their native land to an alien land. This can happen by force or by will. Immigrants usually ache from extensive quandaries like alienation, non-belongingness, cultural conflicts, homesickness etc., which could be termed as diasporic sensibility. The shadow of diaspora darkens when women become the subject. In this paper, the attempt is to track down the intensity and plethora of thoughts that goes through the minds of three women, Mrs. Dutta, Malabika, and Leela, who appear in the initial three short stories of the Indo-American author and poet, Chitra Banerjee Divakarunis short story compilation, The Unknown Errors of Our Lives. The paper explores how memories and nostalgia play a major role in fueling up their endeavor to fight against these diasporic anxieties.
