Displacement and Identity: The Diasporic Journey in Mornings in Jenin
Abstract:
The concept of diaspora, which refers to the dispersion of a people from their original homeland, is intricately linked to questions of identity and belonging. In Susan Abulhawas novel Mornings in Jenin explores the themes of diaspora and identity crisis. Set against the backdrop of the Palestinian diaspora, the novel follows the Abulheja family as they navigate the emotional and psychological turmoil of displacement and exile. This paper examines how the characters grapple with fractured identities, catch between the memory of their homeland and the challenges of adapting to new environments. It delves into the generational and cultural tensions that contribute to the characters on going search for belonging and the formation of hybrid identities.
