Memory and Melancholy in the Selected Poems of R Cheran
Abstract:
Rudramoorthy Cheran is a Tamil diasporic writer, who explores the impact of the Sri Lankan Civil War. The lush memories of the displaced people cannot be recreated but forces to be relived in the harrowing memories of the war. The reminiscence of the past instils melancholy in the livelihood of the exiles, which will be expanded through the poems of Cheran. The collective memory exists as a disappointment and longing for a serene past. Memories of the traumatic past to escape their homeland, turns out to be lethal in the lives of displaced diasporic people. As a result, the exiles carry a melancholy of not belonging anywhere in the world. This paper reflects upon the memory that weighs down in the lives of diasporic population after their escape to a safer land through the select poems of the writer.
