Title of the paper :
The State-Centric Security Approach to Indias Neighbourhood Policy and its Impact on the Development of Northeast India
Abstract:
Northeast India is situated in the easternmost region of India, which comprises of the seven contiguous states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and the Himalayan state of Sikkim. The Northeast region shares international borders with several neighbouring countries, namely China, Nepal and Bhutan in the north, Myanmar in the east, and Bangladesh in the west. The region is virtually landlocked and isolated from the rest of India, with connection to the mainland of India through a narrow strip of land, known as the Chickens Neck or Siliguri Corridor in the northern part of the state of West Bengal. Thus, the geographical location of Northeast India is in such a way that the region is virtually isolated from the rest of India and is situated closer to many of Indias neighbouring countries in the east. The geographical isolation of the Northeast region from the rest of India along with the topography and climatic conditions of the region has hindered the developmental efforts in the region. Moreover, besides the geographical distance, the cultural and political complexities of Northeast India have added to the peripheral nature and isolation of the region from the rest of India. The lack of integration with the rest of India along with ethnic-political assertions among different sections of society in the region has led to issues of insurgency, poor governance, and political instability in the Northeast, which have further hindered the development process in the region.
