Abstract:
Vijay Tendulkar has been one of the biggest names of Marathi theatre. He gave theatre a completely perspective. Most of his plays have foregrounded issues which were previously withheld from any stage representation. The research paper aims to present the displacement of the characters in Tendulkars play Sakharam Binder. The shifting nature, the abuser and victim in each of the characters in different situational dynamics forms and interesting and complex study. The play runs on two explicit themes of homeless and shifting. Moreover, the male in his works have usually been the domineering set who have commodified or objectified women in some way or the other, but this play Sakharam Binder, has a very distinctive theme. The system is the enslavement of women in postcolonial India, despite the promises of democracy and modernity. Sakharam, a bookbinder, picks up other mens discarded women- castoff wives who would otherwise be homeless, destitute or murdered with impunity and takes them in as domestic servant sand sex partners. The research paper tries to draw conclusion regarding the displacement of characters in which they struggle at every level.
