Title of the paper :
Postcolonialism in Shyam Selvadurais Funny Boy and Amitav Ghoshs Shadow Lines
Abstract:
Postcolonialism deals with the effects of colonialism and imperialism during and after its historical end. Postcolonial theory is the social, economic, political, cultural and historical impact of euro-centric hegemony on colonized nations in different parts of the world, between the 18th and 20th centuries. Postcolonialism and Cultural Studies help us to critically analyse problematic histories which continue to affect colonies even after the end of colonialism. Selvadurais Funny Boy, set in the backdrop of the 1983 Sri Lankan riots, portrays a young Tamils homosexual tendencies. Ghoshs The Shadow Lines, set in the milieu of various historical events of India depicts widespread death and devastation. This paper will analyse the themes in the novels, Shyam Selvadurais Funny Boy 1994 and Amitav Ghoshs The Shadow Lines 1988 to depict the postcolonial element. It intends to depict the identity crisis, communal riots, migration, entangled memory, cultural deviations, resistance and appropriation of language.
