Abstract:
Violence is one of the leading causes of death for people aged 15-44 years worldwide WHO, 2002. More than 1.6 million people lose their lives every year WHO, 2002. According to World Health Organization, violence is defined as, ‘The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, against a group or community, that either results in or has high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation’ WHO, Injury a leading cause of the global burden of disease, 2002. An act of violence can stem from aggression but an aggressive person may not always act out violently. Aggression is understood as a behavior aimed at harming others physically or psychologically. When such behavior is intentionally performed with the goal of intentional injury or destruction, it is termed hostile aggression. Other types of aggression are less deliberately damaging and may be instrumentally motivated proactive or affectively motivated reactive. Both aggressiveness and violence can disturb physical and mental dimension of health, individually and at the societal level. Mindfulness based interventions have a salubrious effect on psychological health. Meditation is an important tool among the mindfulness based interventions.
