A Descriptive Study on Educational status and its challenges among tribes in Attappadi, Palakkad - Kerala
Abstract:
Both central government and state government have committed themselves to the development of tribal education and socio economic status. All the possible programmes, welfare schemes and all kinds of incentives are offered to the development of tribals. The study concerned in Attappady, the most educationally backward tribal area in Palakkad district, in a state that has the highest literacy rate in country. Tribal communities in Attappadi, who are educationally backward, socially marginalized and culturally segregated. More than seven decades of development efforts have failed to bring about a significant change in their situation. So the educational status of this community is still poor. It has several factors responsible for educational deprivation of tribal people. Followed by family responsibility, financial problem, lack of interest in studies, lack of support from parents and early marriage all these reasons are the root cause of the exclusion of tribes in education. All the above factors, poverty are the basic reason for educational backwardness among tribes in Attappadi. Poverty and education are inseparably linked and their educational condition is very deplorable. Methodologically this study used both primary and secondary data. The sampling technique that adopted for the study is simple random method a type of probability sampling. Interview schedule is prepared and 150 house hold were interviewed who belonging to Irula community in Attappadi. Therefore this study is intended on sociological aspects of tribal educational status and its challenges.
